Art transforms space!
Whether with a realistic mural, faux painting or trompe l'oeil technique, a mundane or ordinary space can be given a whole new dimension, mood or meaning.
Faux is a fashionable French term used to describe something made to resemble something else. Literally meaning 'false', faux is the term for finisheswhich look like something they are not.
Trompe l'oeil, also a French term, means "deception of the eye". It is applied to painting so realistic that it may fool the viewer into thinking thatthe objects or scene represented are real rather than painted. Also referred to as illusionism, or creating the illusion of reality.
One of the more familiar forms of trompe l'oeil is the painted simulation of interior architectural elements such as pilasters, engaged columns, moldings, even cupolas, executed in extremely real perspective.

Trompe l'oeil plaster exposing tile with grapevines
Behind a wine bar on the wall of an indoor walk in wine
cellar is a great place for the look of cracked plaster
exposing the tile that matches the tile used around the
bar area. Add the grapes and it reads wine to the guest!
Faux Painting on columns and trim accentuates and compliments the western decor in this
Fort Worth home. The three colors - light brown base, dark brown and copper glazes applied
with a ragging technique - applied to the trim gives it a feeling of depth in time making the upper
shelf worthy of holding the antique cowboy boot collection.
